Security Analyst Identifies Abuse Of Power As The Most Damaging Phenomenon In Nigeria
Amidst myriads of negative factors militating against a progressive Nigeria, a security analyst; Mr. Matthew Ibadin has identified abuse of power by some people in the corridors of power as the most damaging element.
Speaking on the theme “Nigeria’s Dynamic Crossroads: Security Paths to National Growth and Glory” on Saturday at a security summit in Lagos, Ibadin noted that there were many challenges that currently beset Nigeria as a country, but abuse of power prompted by ethnic, religious or personal biases which interfere with the Rule of Law, has become a major hindrance to the country’s advancement.
According to him, “this practice reduces the effectiveness of national security as some people in positions of power have chosen to pervert justice to suit personal interests. If law enforcement officials for example, can uphold the law impartially, setting aside these biases, they would no longer be seen as enemies of the people.”
He called for an end to the “do you know who I am culture” where some privileged citizens use their status as politicians, money bags etc to intimidate others.
At the one day event organized by BuzzNews, to mark its 2024 Bussnews Entrepreneurship Security & Technology Awards (BEST) which held at the Civic Center, Victoria Island, Ibadin upheld that “Nigeria stands at a dynamic crossroads, and our path to growth and glory relies on our collective commitment to security, justice and accountability.”
“By reforming our criminal justice system, embracing technological innovation, harmonising our national identification systems, fostering patriotism and strengthening our institutions, we can overcome our security challenges,” he asserted.
In his lecture, the security chieftain who is the Chief Executive Officer of Badinson Security Service Limited and currently a doctoral student at the University of Abuja, took time to speak on the need for justice reform and effective policing, building infrastructure for effective crime documentation, addressing the root causes of insecurity, national identity and responsibility, the role of media and public perception. He also spoke on accountability and integrity.
While delivering his lecture, Ibadin observed that since 1999 terrorists and criminals have not faced adequate prosecution under any democratically elected government. According to him, “this lack of accountability, combined with an ineffective policing system, hampers vital investigation and undermines public confidence. We urgently need a thorough reform and reorientation of our criminal justice system – one that prioritizes justice, fairness and effectiveness.
On infrastructure for effective crime documentation, the security chieftain maintained that rather than compete among themselves, the various agencies managing identification systems like BVN, NIN, passport, voter’s cards and driver’s license should collaborate. He posited that disjointed approach by the agencies would hinder effective tracking of citizens across states and compromising national security.
The security analyst also took a swipe on lack of stable electric power supply in the country and argued that “industrialisation is critical to our nation’s growth, yet industries capable of employing thousands are relocating to other countries due to power challenges. This lead to job losses, economic instability and increased insecurity as opportunities reduces.”
Expatiating on the role of media and public perception, Ibadin noted that the media have a powerful influence on national sentiment emphasizing that our media must therefore take control of our narrative and celebrate Nigeria’s achievements rather than dwell on the negatives.
The one day event apart from the lecture, also witnessed the honouring of some distinguished personalities with awards. The awardees included Ibadin who was recognized as The Most Outstanding Resourceful/Innovative Security Personality of Year.
Dignitaries present at the event included Osun State First Lady, Her Excellency Ngozi Adeleke, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Fayoade Adegoke ably represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti Lagos.
