Historical accounts reveal that Igbosere derived its name from the Yoruba words ‘Igbo’ and ‘Osere’, meaning the forest of Osere trees, which were abundant in the area, prized for their wood’s utility in carpentry and canoe crafting for navigating and fishing on the Lagos lagoon.
Commercial endeavors in the region drew businessmen from multiple distant and local communities, specifically Ijebu, Ilaje, Oyo, Ijesha, Egun, Itsekiri, and others, including Benin, to trade and source goods at Aromire’s farm, Oko Aromire, located at Iduro Imota, the historic assembly point of the Imota people, subsequently renamed Idumota.
At Onikan, the hub of carpentry, Osere trees from Igbo Osere Forest were transformed into planks and wood, and the finished products were then marketed at Iddo island.
